Forschungsinteressen

Research interest

My research issue relates to the widely discussed decline of wild insect pollinators. I focus on land-use changes and habitat degradation as one driver of this complex problem. The habitat quality as a means of pollinator food supply varies greatly between different biotope types. In an extensive field study, the habitat qualities of several urban and near-natural environments are evaluated using bumblebee colonies (Bombus terrestris). The nest-growth rate of each colony can be linked to the amount and quality of food foraged by worker bees. Further examination of the habitats’ biotope types, their connectivity, and the identification of flowering plant species enable the assessment of the sites’ composition. These results allow, in combination with the bumblebee colony growth rates, conclusions about the habitat quality of each environment.
